Joey Tabone
Senior Advisor for Climate Change, The Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment, The Built Environment
Hello, my name is Joey Tabone and I started work with The Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment in July 2007. I made the move from one great capital city to another – from Canberra, Australia to London, England. Although worlds apart at 16,984 km as the crow flies – one very fit, albeit tired, crow - the similarities for me lie in the diversity of people, great quality food, and high intellectual capital that exists in each of these cities. London is also a fabulous town for cycling, so it gets extra points in my books.
I joined The Prince’s Foundation because I believe in its unique approach to planning, teaching and practising. The Foundation’s common sense climate change approach is logical, practical and achievable right now. Good neighbourhood design characteristics and a better built environment is one of the major paths to a better climate future.
My brief within The Foundation is to seek solutions to the climate challenge through the built environment. My work focuses on climate change impacts and adaptation; highlights the importance of carbon reduction measures; teaches the effects of dangerous climate change in the planning, designing and building contexts; and leads the global dialogue on built environment climate change approaches.
The Foundation is also leading on the corporate front with a comprehensive in-house carbon reduction strategy. This involves a recycling scheme (including worms!); a carbon offset programme for all corporate energy use and transport; and a corporate fleet consisting of a Foundation bicycle called Stanley. All in all, the place is a exciting place to work with a really nice mix of people from all over the world with varying skills and interests. The building at Charlotte Road is lovely too – you should visit us sometime!
