Villains: Othello and Shylock, Prof Helen Cooper with the Royal Shakespeare Company

Prof Helen Cooper, Professor of Medieval and Renaissance English Literature at the University of Cambridge, introduces a day devoted to Shakespeare's villains. 

Aims of the day are for teachers attending to:

  • Understand the historical context of Othello and Shylock, in the context of great villains from the Greeks to modern-day drama
  • Have a better understanding of the ambiguities of Othello and Shylock
  • Leave the day equipped with practical approaches to illustrating them.

The day is being led by Eve Myers-Belkin, English Teacher at The Henrietta Barnett School in London and includes teacher workshops that consider ways of bringing Shakespeare to life in the classroom and a practical drama workshop with the RSC Learning team.

Speakers include:
Professor Helen Cooper has been Professor of Medieval and Renaissance English at the University of Cambridge since 2004 [in the Chair originally founded for C.S. Lewis]. After taking both her BA and PhD at New Hall, Cambridge, she spent 26 years at University College, Oxford, as a tutorial fellow, with responsibility for teaching literature from 1100-1660 and the twentieth century. Her books include The Oxford Guides to Chaucer: The Canterbury Tales, Pastoral: Mediaeval into Renaissance, and The English Romance in Time. She currently organises the academic English side of the Prince's Teaching Institute residential courses.

Situated in the heart of London's South Bank, The Warehouse offers an intimate atmosphere. As well as a rehearsal space for theatre companies, it serves as a rehearsing venue for many of the finest London orchestras and international artists. It is also a much-loved location by independent producers and television companies and has proved ideal for photographic sessions.

The event price for the first applicant per school department is £195, which includes lunch, all refreshments and materials. The price for further applicants from the same department is £65 per person.
