To celebrate 150 years since the publication of The Origin of Species, The Prince's Teaching Institute is running a CPD day on Charles Darwin. This fantastic event is being held at Darwin's home, Down House in Kent. Speakers include Professor John Hedley Brooke, Emeritus Fellow of Harris Manchester College, Oxford and Honorary Professor of the History of Science at Lancaster University. 

The aims of the day are to:

  • set Darwin in historical context and bring the man and his work to life
  • allow delegates to discover how Darwin's work informs today's research
  • give delegates an insight into the environment in which Darwin worked, and the way in which it impacted on his work.

The day will include a tour of Down House, exploration of its gardens, as well as lectures and teacher workshops.

Speakers will include:

Professor John Hedley Brooke
Professor John Hedley Brooke held the Andreas Idreos Professorship of Science & Religion and Directorship of the Ian Ramsey Centre at Oxford University from 1999 to 2006. He is an Emeritus Fellow of Harris Manchester College, Oxford and Honorary Professor of the History of Science at Lancaster University. In 2007 he was a Distinguished Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies at the University of Durham. His books include Science and Religion: Some Historical Perspectives (Cambridge University Press, 1991); Thinking About Matter: Studies in the History of Chemical Philosophy (Ashgate, 1995); and (with Geoffrey Cantor) Reconstructing Nature: The Engagement of Science & Religion (T & T Clark, 1998). A former President of the British Society for the History of Science and of the Historical Section of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, he is currently President of the Forum for Science & Religion.

The event price for the first applicant per school department is £195, which includes lunch, all refreshments and materials. The price for further applicants from the same department is £65 per person.
