PSTA, Spring Programme

Join the Spring Programme classes at The Prince’s School of Traditional Arts (PSTA) and share in their experience and knowledge of the traditional arts and crafts of the world.

PSTA's programme offers evening and weekend tuition, materials provided. All courses are led by expert and experienced practitioners who exhibit and teach nationally and internationally.

Courses are suitable for all levels – beginners welcome.

Spring programme

MARQUETRY
5th-9th January

Tutor: Tom Bree
Students will learn techniques of cutting and assembling individual shapes from wood veneer to create a finished pattern. They will produce at least on sanded and varnished panel of straight-line geometric marquetry.

GEOMETRY AND THE ORDER OF NATURE
19th Jan – 9th March

This course introduces students to the basic principles of geometry and number in Nature. It includes the study of the primary symmetry groups and their diverse application in the arts and crafts of the great traditions of the world.

BIOMORPHIC DESIGN
14th Jan – 4th March

This course introduces students to the principles of decorative design through the analysis of plant or ‘biomorphic’ forms (sometimes known as ‘arabesque’). Through the exploration of case studies from various historical and cultural references, the course will investigate the underlying principles and order from which these designs emerge.

CERAMIC TILES
January – 15th/22nd/29th, Feb – 5th/12th/19th, March – 5th/19th

This course will take students through a comprehensive process of making ceramic tiles; from the study of the repeat geometric units to understanding the nature of clay and glazes, it will give students the practical skills to make a complete tile panel.

PIGMENTS, COLOUR HARMONY AND TRADITIONAL PAINTING TECHNIQUES

This course introduces students to the preparation of traditional pigments for use in egg tempera, watercolour and oils. Participants will also explore some of the rich symbolism of colour as well as different approaches to creating harmonious palettes, resulting in a finished painting by the end of the course.

MEDIEVAL MANUSCRIPT ILLUMINATION
Every Saturday
14th Feb – 7th March
10:00 – 17:00
Tutor: Helen White
This course introduces students to techniques of manuscript illumination and decoration drawing from the medieval European tradition. The students will be instructed in the painting of miniature designs and the application of a variety of gilding techniques.
